Courses
All CFS Courses:
...aim to bridge theory and practice by combining internship analysis with salient topics in the field and assignments that help students practice fundamental skills. We keep these seminar-style classes small to encourage communication and reflection. Classes meet weekly and typically mix discussions, student presentations, structured activities, and participatory lectures, sometimes with guests or field trips along the way.
Course modality varies as follows:
- In Fall, Winter, and Spring, all CFS courses take place in person on the Evanston campus except 388: Field Studies in Business Culture. 388 takes place online and is only available to students whose internships require them to live and work in-person far from the Chicago area for a substantial portion of the quarter.
- In Summer, all CFS courses take place online so that we can offer maximum flexibility for students.
- This means that “CFS 388: Business Culture” is open to applicants with any internship arrangement in Summer.
- If you might want to take “CFS 388: Business Culture” in a Fall, Winter, or Spring Quarter because you hope to intern away from the Chicago area during the regular school year and want an online CFS course, you should not take it in Summer Session.
Course times vary as follows:
- In Fall, Winter, and Spring, all CFS courses currently take place 1 evening a week on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.
- We sometimes experiment with other times or days in some courses to find the most effective timing for all involved. In such cases, we inform applicants and accepted students as soon as possible.
- In Summer most CFS courses currently take place 1 evening a week on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. We sometimes offer some Summer courses on weekend mornings or afternoons, depending on instructor and student availability. In such cases, we inform applicants and accepted students as soon as possible.
When choosing a CFS course to apply for, you should consider:
- ...which course themes match your internship interests. (Field Studies in the Modern Workplace and Field Studies in Humanities welcome the broadest range of internships.) Explore each course using the tabs on the left-hand side of this page.
- ...your time limitations and credit needs. Most CFS classes are now available for a range of possible credits (1-4 or 2-4). We strongly urge students to consider their schedules and availability carefully before applying to CFS.
